January 2009 Trivia
"Smoke ascending indicates clear weather." Clear skies are generally associated with high barometric pressure. This happens when we are located between storm systems - whirlpools of air spiraling into a low pressure center. When we are between storms, the wind often drops to calm, following a northwesterly wind and preceding a southeasterly wind. With calm, smoke rises vertically because there is no air motion to carry the smoke in any direction. Thus, smoke ascending indicates clear weather.
