The consensus among long-range forecasters was that this winter would be colder and snowier. It's been anything but that. We did receive some nice moisture totals in December but it really wasn't until late January that we received snow. Any snow before late January melted as the temperatures have been warmer than normal. Arctic air did filter in for a few days and the cold did preserve some snow cover in late January. The lack of snow cover has really affected our temperatures. A good snow cover can mean as much as a10ยบ drop in the temperature. With that in mind, temperatures this month are favored to be near normal. If we had a snow cover, I'd be inclined to say colder. Precipitation has been good so far and I expect this trend to continue. We might even total above normal. Prospects favor quite a bit of precipitation activity the opening week of the month. Expect clouds with passing snows from Wednesday to Friday, Feb. 1-3. Snow totals should be light and it could start off as rain then, change over to snow. Clouds are favored to thicken along with the prospect of heavier snowfall totals for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4-5. Temperatures should turn colder. Variable clouds with passing light snows are favored from Monday to Thursday, Feb. 6-9. A series of quick-moving weather systems is expected for an extended time period from Friday to Tuesday, Feb. 10-21. The quick-moving weather pattern will give us alternating days of sun, clouds and precipitation for this period. The weather pattern is favored to settle down from Wednesday to Wednesday, Feb. 22-29. We might squeeze in a day of clouds and precipitation on Saturday, Feb. 25.
